Evaluation
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
When I came to creating my digipak I thought very closely
about the forms and conventions of real media products. For example my Signum
logo I created at the top of my digipak is bold and stands out from the rest of
the digipak. The text I chose is called IMPACT, and it does live up to its name
as it creates an impact on my digipak. I think the text stands out well and is
well suited for my artist and digipak. I decided to keep the look of my digipak
the same throughout; I did this by keeping the same text. During my research
and planning I figured out that that the most popular digipaks have the same
style throughout, I took this research and put it into practise when it came to
creating my own digipak.
The setting and location of my magazine advert was again
completely designed on a computer. The red grungy background I created myself
my using several different brushes in Photoshop. This allows my magazine advert
to stand out when a reader turns over the page. My magazine advert looks the
same as my digipak. The theory behind this was s that the reader would already
have the image of the digipak in their head once they saw the advert. On the
title of the album “What Ya Got 4 Me” I used a gradient effect causing the text
to have two different shades of colour. I felt this allowed the text to stand
out even more. Using all of these different effects from the editing of my
characters image to the use of effects on the text have helped me to create my ‘Star
Image’ and has allowed me to reach the main target in advertising. To create a
product the client will remember and want to listen to over and over again.
2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

4. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
When I came to creating my digipak I thought very closely
about the forms and conventions of real media products. For example my Signum
logo I created at the top of my digipak is bold and stands out from the rest of
the digipak. The text I chose is called IMPACT, and it does live up to its name

creating my own digipak.
The setting and location of my digipak was completely
designed on a computer. The red grungy background I created myself my using
several different brushes in Photoshop. This allows my digipak to stand out
from the rest. When creating the digipak I didn’t want it to look plain and
empty, so I thought by creating an interesting background image, any space left
would easily be filled and not as noticeable. The main character in the middle
of the digipak I would class as the prime element in the digipak and the image
that stands out the most. I have done this by adding effects to my characters
face to make him look more like a cartoon, and then added drop shadows to the
image along with a red outer glow. This allows the head to “POP” out of the
digipak and stands out to my target audience. This theory about having a main “Star
Image” comes from Dyer and from doing this I have followed the real media
conventions.
The star image of my character was taken as a close up to
show detail on the characters face and to allow him to stand out on the
digipak. In my draft design I had my characters image as a long shot showing
the majority of his body, also the image was unedited and didn’t fit in with
the rest of the digipak. During the process of creating my digipak editing was
used throughout and has a big part in the final product. When doing research
into the club genre I discovered that when creating a digipak, they never seem
to follow a theme. From finding this information I decided to create my digipak
completely away from my music video as I didn’t want it to look the same.
When I created my magazine advert I had the same intentions
as my digipak, by creating something that jumps out the page and grabs the reader’s
attention. My title does exactly this;
the font used is bold and has a black shadowing around it, allowing the reader
to notice it. This title I created for my artist will be remembered by my
target audience and it is what they will relate the album too.
The setting and location of my magazine advert was again

my using several different brushes in Photoshop. This allows my magazine advert

3. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Research and Planning
During the creation of my project I used many different
media technologies, and every stage was different. The first stage was my research and planning.
I main used the internet to find all my information out and used Microsoft Word
to record all of my findings. At the start I watched a lot of videos from the
likes of ‘Calvin Harris’ and ‘Example’ to get a feel of a real club video. I
haves used YouTube to its full potential to show my media product from start to
end. Another use of technology was the Canon 550D. “The EOS 550D packs a huge
18-megapixel sensor for super-fine images which can be enlarged up to poster
size without any loss of quality. Canon’s advanced DIGIC 4 processor ensures
lightning-fast start-up times, near-instant image review and grain-free
photography. Fantastic reproduction of colours and subtle tonal gradations make
this ideal for keen amateurs who want the best” (information quotes from http://www.jessops.com). I used the Canon
550D to take photographs of possible locations I could have used for my music
video. In the research section YouTube has been extremely helpful, having
videos at one click of a button 24/7 really helped with outer school research
also. Taking photos of possible locations was also important as it allowed me
to see the venues without physically being there. I could also look at them and
find the pros and cons about each one to narrow down my search.
During the planning section I once again used a range of
different technologies, Such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. I used Microsoft
Word the majority of the time to type up my planning stages to then be added to
my blog. Using word also allows me to correct any spelling or grammar errors
before uploading it to the internet. To show I had used different technologies
I also used Microsoft PowerPoint. I used PowerPoint to present my genre
research and possible plans; I also did the same thing for costume. Once I had
created my PowerPoint presentations I uploaded them to a file sharing website
called ‘Scribd’ (http://www.scribd.com)
which once uploaded, it allowed me to share my PowerPoint’s on blogger. Another
media technology used was email. I used email to contact the owners of my
chosen track to ask their permission to use it. Email allowed me to contact the
artists quickly and free, whereas if I were to send a letter it would have been
hard to find an address and would have taken over a week to post.
Filming
When it came to filming the music video, I used two
different types of cameras. First of I used the Sony XDCAM EX PMW-EX1-
“The XDCAM EX expands upon Sony's XDCAM line of tapeless
acquisition systems, using flash memory technology: the SxS memory card
specification, with high-speed transfer technology compliant to the ExpressCard
industry standard. This camcorder is based on MPEG-2 compression technology
with three, ½-inch imagers. It is switchable between 1080/60i and 720/60P, and
capable of recording 1080/50i/30P/25P/24P and 720/50P. The camera also has slow
and quick motion functionality.” (Quote taken from http://www.dooyoo.co.uk)
This camera was only used for one section of the music
video. I used this camera for the plane landing and taking off. I set the camera on auto focus which allowed
me to have more control over the quality of the image whilst I was zooming into
the plane. I also had to manually set the white balance on the camera to
portray the real colour the morning sky was showing.
The second camera used and the main camera used throughout
the music video was a Canon EOS 550D which I mentioned in my research and
planning.
This camera was used throughout the rest of the video. I
have used this camera in the past and was much more comfortable at using it, so
filming the rest of the music video went very smoothly. Once again I had this
camera completely on manual focus and had to set the white balance. On the 550D
I managed to set the camera to take 50 fps (frames per second) for the sunset
shot. I did this so that in the editing stage the footage will play at 25fps
and the sunset will look twice as fast without me adding any effects to it.
Once I had finished the filming stage of my project, I then
went into the editing stage. For editing my video I used a program called ‘Sony
Vegas Pro 12’. When the videos were placed into Vegas Pro they could all be
viewed, edited and cut down in the timeline. I have used this program in the
past so it was really easy to edit on and I felt comfortable to use it. I did
however learn new features that Sony Vegas Pro 12 has such as many effects and
transitions that I haven’t used before. I used a flare effect for the fast pace
driving clip to make the car look like it was driving faster than it was. It
also gives a sifi feel to the video. I also used a combination of chrome keying
filters to edit the black background out of a firework display I had filmed a
few weeks before shooting. Once this was editing I superimposed the fireworks
and looped them on the landscape panning shot across Nottingham, I felt this
gave an illusion of the whole city celebrating.
Ancillary
Texts
Finally I created my digipak and magazine advert using Adobe
Photoshop. In Photoshop I used different artistic filters on an image of my
main character to allow him to look fake/cartoon like. My background image I make
using different grunge brushes I had downloaded from the internet. Using these
along with different tones of red allowed me to create my nice one of a kind
background. The use of text on my digipak and magazine advert were the same
font. I used a preinstalled text called ‘IMPACT’ I added drop shadows and
colour gradient effects to make it stand out from the background.
When evaluating the technology used it was defiantly appropriate
for creating both my magazine advert and digipak. I have learnt new skills in
using Photoshop and I feel I am much stronger at using it now. Although if you
were new to Photoshop, it would be ideal to once again use YouTube to look up
some tutorials to learn the basics.

Filming
Sunday 23rd September 2012 - Today was the first day of filming. I went out at 2am this morning in the hope to get a nice shot of a plane landing at night. Unfortunately I missed the early plane and had to wait until 6:50am for the next plane. Although it wasn’t the correct shot at first, I think it shows a lot more detail and the sunrise really makes the shot.
Wednesday 3rd October 2012 - Today was the main day of filming. As the weather was really good today I managed to get all of the outdoor shots I wanted. I feel the glare from the sun really gave the video a sense of wow factor and allowed my footage to come out a lot more crisper.
Friday 7th October 2012 – Today was the final day of filming. Although I didn’t get the expected turnout for the shots, I feel the amount of footage that was shot during the night will be more than enough to create an impressive music video.

Planning - Digipak Idea
First off looking at the outside of my digipak you can see it is very minimal. I have chosen to make my digipak very minimal but still getting the point across to the customer. i am wanting to use many different images of disco equipment to relate back to the club genre. My digipak will have 4 panels plus disc art.

Planning - Location
The main location I will be filming my music video will be in an empty warehouse. This is to give the video a rural feel and as it is starring teenagers it looks like they have broken into a building to have a good time with friends. The image below is of the venue i used to shoot the main portion of the video in. As it was extremely hard to find an empty warehouse to use for filming, i resorted to hiring out an old church hall and dressed it to look like a club.
Another location will be at east midlands airport. I will be filming a plane landing at night time with the DJ leaving the airport and into a limo or car. The reason for filming at night is that the airport is empty and will be easier to film the certain shots I want. Below is an email that was send to east midlands airport requesting permission to film on their premises.
The other main location would be Nottingham’s market square. This is where the DJ will be meeting most of his friends/fans after his tweet he posted just as he got off the plane. I want to get a long shot of everyone meeting in the town centre. For this I will need to be high up and looking down.
Planning - Props
In my music video i wont really be using many prop. the only major props i will be using are a pair Pioneer CDJ2000 and a Pioneer DJM 2000.
These two pieces of equipment are what many DJs in Ibiza use in clubs and pubs. The CDJ2000's range from about £800 each and the DJM 2000 is around £1500. Overall i will be using 3 props with the value of around £3000.
In the video these will be shown throughout, as this is what the DJ is carrying off the plain, info the car, and through town to get to the venue to preform a DJ set. From using these props it will give the video a professional feel as these props are top of the range and are already used in many music videos such as 'David Guetta - When Love Takes Over' -
Image of the Props
Planning - Camera Angles
One of the two main camera shot that I will be using in my music video is a close-up. This is to show the audience facial expressions to see what the actor is feeling. It can also be used to zoom in on product labels (advertising products?).
The second main shot i will be using is a mid shot. This shot will be used to follow the DJ on his course from the Airport to the abandon warehouse. this will give the video a more realistic feel and could potentially give the audience the feeling they are there.
I will also be using a few extreme close-ups to show mouth movement for lip syncing. I will also use extreme closeups to show facial expressions or to show detail on some of the props used, for example the use of DJ mixing decks and disco lighting.
Planning - Actors/Performers
In my music video I will only be having one main character and the others will just be extras. My main character will be played by Ashley Woodward. He’s 17 years of age and has a natural feel for music. The reason he has a natural feel for music is because is actually a DJ and does gig's once a week. This is why I have chosen him to play the role of the DJ. I think he will fit into the character really well and will look like a natural. Ashley is always wearing a pair of headphones around his neck which fits perfectly with the mise-en-scene of the character as I want the DJ to look upbeat and match the typical scenario of a DJ.Research - Target Audience
Target Audience
Signums targets an audience of alternative, Dance, Hip-hop music enthusiasts, as the music is mainly dance tracks and don’t have many lyrics it. Signum would also appeal to electro and pop music fans, making the single quite dynamic and to appealing to a range of listeners. I took it upon myself to do a little research of my own to truly identify Signums main target audience. I went around shops looking through magazine articles to find Signum mentioned in there. I them went home and found that the target audience of the magazine was mainly males between the ages of 17-30. Therefore I can approximate the majority of Signums fans follow the same trend. As well as this I managed to find Signums Facebook page and it shows that they have over 15,000 followers which identifies them as being known worldwide, and are currently doing a tour of Russia and Ibiza .
From looking at what i found out about Signums target audience i will be sticking to the same target audience as them and not trying to merge the song into other genres.

Planning - Permission
Record Permission
Singum have become over the years a well known name and the song we are creating a music video for is there first ever hit single 'What Ya Got 4 Me'. When i was searching for an email address the only one i could come across is there booking email. I sent my email asking for permission to use their track for my video and as of yet i haven't had a reply.
Filming Permission
For the main portion of my video i am wanting to shoot it in an abandon warehouse. I have been on the phone to Paul Clements estate agency. They will be getting back to me on Friday 21st September to let me know if they have found me a building i can use for the video.
If I don't manage to get the building off Paul Clements, i will start to look around smaller venues such as function rooms. If i manage to get hold of a function room, it will just be a case of dressing it up to look like a club.
Research - Genre
Music Video Conventions
The majority of Heavy Metal track at played in minor keys whereas POP Songs are played in major keys. This gives a totally opposite feel to the music.
When
looking at music video, they all show lots of different conventions. These
conventions all depend on the genre of the music. This could be from ‘POP Music’
to ‘Heavy Rock’. When looking at ‘Heavy Metal’
music video such as they always seem to
be very low lighting. Heavy Metal video never have a story to them as the
majority of the video if focused on the band (mainly the singer) playing in an abandoned room or warehouse. If a Heavy Metal band were to tell a story in their
video it would be all happy and joyful with bright colours and people smiling.
They will stick to there genre and have people moaping around in black makeup
looking depressed.
The majority of Heavy Metal track at played in minor keys whereas POP Songs are played in major keys. This gives a totally opposite feel to the music.
When
looking at POP Music it has a completely different feel to it than the heavy
metal music videos. POP Music is more joyful and something the audience can enjoy watching over and over again. POP Videos tend to be in natural light
telling a love story of some sort. These videos have a lot more camera angles
and shots as the music is more fast pace so the cuts are made in time with the
beat of the music.
When relating these conventions to my music video i will be mainly aiming towards the pop side of things as the tracks i have been looking at are played in major keys showing a happy vibe. As i have been looking into club tracks adding some of the conventions of a typical pop song could challenge the codes and conventions of a typical club track causing some interesting feedback.

Research - About Signum
Signum is the name for two European producers, Pascal Minnaard and Ronald Hagen. They are producers who create and remix mainly trance music.
Originally they both lived in The Netherlands. In 2008, Pascal Minnaard moved to Norway with his fiance. Both Hagen and Minnaard still work together with the aid of digital technology and share projects together to create Signum tracks and DJ sets.
Their first notable mainstream success was in 1997 with "What Ya Got 4 Me" (This is the song myself and Ashley are using for our music video). This record was released on the Jinx record label, becoming a club anthem. This song was re-released in 2001 and entered the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart. With their success of "What Ya Got 4 Me", they continued to remix tracks and produce material including; "Forever", "Better Off Alone", "Take U There" and "On Stream". A lot of their work in this period did well in dance and club charts.
Their next big achievement came when they collaborated with the British producer / DJ Scott Mac, to create "Coming On Strong", which was a hit in the club industry. After this, they went to do remixes for ATB and Alice DeeJay.
Their DJ debut was in July 2001 at Gatecrasher, and they went on to play at various dance venues including 'Godskitchen', 'Gatecrasher', 'Passion' and 'Slinky'. They also played at several music festivals that year. Since their debut, that have played in the countries including Australia, Spain, Japan, Ibiza, Canada and Malaysia.
They were signed to Armada Music in the summer of 2003, and released their first single "Push Through". In 2004 Signum teamed up with female vocalist Anita Kelsey, and created "Come Around Again", This track was another success. From a interview with Signum they quoted "This is the track we have always wanted to make".
Signum also produce music under another alias 'D-Factor'. In 2008 Signum featured in the Top 100 in the DJ magazine's awards, finishing at #72 on the list.
Planning - Risk Assessment
As I will be filming in in the city centre I will be very cautious as to where I am filming, to make sure I don’t walk into anyone or cause anyone any harm during the filming.
Planning - Brainstorm
The above image is of my brainstorm. This goes through rough ideas for my music video and possible ideas i could use to make my video stand out from the rest. I have chosen a club track for my music video and my ideas really fit in with the genre of the music.

Research - Magazine Advert - The Killers
This magazine advert is for the Killers “Day and Age” album. We can see from the main background image that it has been created using computer software and hasn’t been taken with a camera (although the ideas in the background image could have come from real images). The image has been computer generated and has had a tile texture put over the top of it to make it stand out.
This advert doesn’t include any members of the band and this could be down to them being well known. This is a technique used by many bands and artists nowadays that give the sense to the reader that they are mysterious and gives the readers the feeling that they are 'in the know'.
The picture shown here is also the album cover, this is a convention thoroughly tried and tested by many bands and artists and helps readers find the album when they are searching in music stores or online.
On this advert they don’t include any reviews, this is probably another way of keeping mysterious and keeping the advert simple, it may also be because they feel they don’t need to hype themselves up anymore and the words 'the brand new album' work just as well for them now.
The advert also includes the bands record company and their own website for readers and loyal fans to see more info and interactive material about the band.
Research - Magazine Advert - Kings Of Leon
This magazine advert once again does not give a lot of information about the album, but the information it does give is very important such as the title of the band and the album. They both stand out very well and are easy to see being at the header and footer of the image. Below the album name it says “The new album includes Sex on Fire, Crawl, and Use Somebody.” This is important to have on the advert as it grabs the reader’s attention and persuades them to by the album by showing what well known songs are in there.
The colours used on this advert are mainly shades of grey, they have used this because it links in with the genre of the band and also it links in with the colour scheme of the album cover making it all link together. This also relates back to Negus Theory.
I feel the main conventions of this advert are the title of the band and the main image stand out from the advert. The image is the main cover for the front of the album and using this gets the image in reader mind and when the reader sees the image again, the first thing that will pop in their head is the release date and artist.
Research - Magazine Advert - Kasabian
From looking at many magazine adverts most of them generally have little information such as a release date and a plain design or large photo of the artist or graphic design. This magazine advert clearly shows the band's name ‘Kasabian’ in the centre of the poster and release date at the bottom. The advert itself doesn't say much about the music. This one is for an album so for a single we could include the name of the song. This advert also includes the logo of the record label. When looking at this poster it also shows reviews from other magazines.
The colours of this magazine advert has a very dull background with a colourful image in the centre of it. This has been done to catch the reader attention. The big, black, bold logo is the centre piece of the advert and is the first thing the reader sees. With the logo saying the bands name it paints a clear picture in the readers mind of who it is and it is the first thing they remember.
When we think of Negus Theory - "A naturalistic approach to artist" this advert fits right into that. The advert is very minimalistic but with just enough information to put the point across.

Research - Digipak - AC/DC
Here we have a digipak for AC DC advertising their latest single for the film ‘Iron Man 2’. On the very front of the digipak we can see the album artwork along with the artists well known logo and the name of the album. Typically on a digipak when you come to purchase on in a shop you get large stickers on the front stating the well-known songs that are included in the CD.
This is to persuade the audience to purchase the CD The main artwork on the front has been created with bright colours to make it look more attractive. Digipaks are seen as the LP's of this century and can be seen as a collectable like LP's as they are much more interesting than a standard jewel case. The spine of the digipak is very simple with not a lot of artwork on other than the logo and the name of the album.
Research - Digipak - AC/DC
Here we have another digipak from AC/DC and is for their album ‘Back In Black’. This was released in 2009 to the UK and is a limited edition 10-track digitally remastered CD album featuring the singles 'Rock 'n' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution' and 'You Shook Me All Night Long'. It is presented in a digipak pictured sleeve housed in an embossed rigid collectable glossy hype-stickered picture box. It’s complete with a cover art sticker, badge, guitar pick, key ring and Temp logo tattoo.
As you can see from the book there is a very large image of guitarist Angus Young as he is considered the frontman of the band and very iconic. The image has been changed to black and white to keep with the theme of the digipak.
Research - Digipak - Jack Johnson
This digipak is for Jack Johnson’s ‘In Between Dreams’
album. On the front of this cover we can
see a shadow silhouette of what is portrayed as Jack Johnson under a large
tree. The artwork on this digipak is very simple and has simple colour. There
is also a sticker in the bottom right hand corner showing this album is a
special edition.
This can persuade the audience to purchase the CD. In the top
right hand corner you have Jack Johnson’s logo and underneath we can see the
name of the album in a smaller font. On the back of the digipak it is a similar
theme to the front with the yellow background and a tree trunk to the right of
the frame in the same colour as the front.
The inside of the digipak is a lot different to the outer case as there
is more colour. We can see a picture of
Joack Johnson with his guitar on the left hand side. The disc artwork is very
similar once again to the outer cover (yellow background with a grey tree
element).
Research - Music Video - Pitbull
The final music video I am going to analyse is by Pitbull “Back In Time”. The genre of this video is Dance-pop.
"Back in Time" was originally released as the lead single from the soundtrack of sci-fi film sequel, Men in Black 3. But for unknown reasons, it didn't make the final cut onto the official soundtrack. The single was released via download on March 26, 2012, The single to date has sold over 1.3 million copies digitally.
The relationship between the music and the visuals in this video are not really close. The visuals of the video have a completely different genre to the lyrics or the way they are sung. The video is clearly shown as a Si-Fi. As for the lyrics they have been rapped not sung so this brings a more dance/pop feel to the song.
The relation between the visuals and the lyrics do portray the genre to the audience, as they lyrics do explain the movie ‘Men in Black 3’. The lyrics explain that the video is set in the past, which is also shown in the title of the song “Back In Time”.
In this video the performance is mostly narrative based as the majority of the time we can see someone singing. During the video we get cuts from the movie ‘Men in Black 3’ the shows a short story through the video and can explain the movie a bit more to the audience. This video can also persuade the audience to go and see the movie if they haven’t done so.

Research - Music Video - LMFAO
Another Music video I am going to analyse is by LMFAO “Champaign Showers”. The genre of this video is Electro house.
The relationship between the music and the visuals in this video are very clear to the audience and can explain the song meaning. The song is clearly portrayed about people going out to a party and having a good time drinking and dancing. Most of the other LMFAO videos are based around the same aspect.
The relation between the visuals and the lyrics don’t really show the audience what the meaning of the song is. This video has been created with the intention of giving the audience freedom, with this the audience can portray themselves what they think the video means.
In this video the performance is mostly narrative based as the majority of the time we can see someone singing. During the video we go get shots of ‘Redfoo’ and a woman talking, this could give the impression that the lyrics are meant for the woman.
Research - Music Videos- Ne-Yo
This Music video I am going to analyse is by Ne-Yo “Let Me Love You” and is in the R&B/POP genre.
The relation between the visuals and the music help show the meaning of the video, being about losing someone you have loved in the past. This is shown to the audience by using slow motion in the video which represent flashbacks or past memories.
The Relation between the visuals and the lyrics helps the audience see what the video represents. In this case can hear Ne-Yo singing about a woman but using the visuals we are able to see Ne-Yo singing and with the use of transactions we see the woman he is singing about.
In this music video, the performance is narrative based. We can clearly see Ne-Yo showing his love for this woman who is portrayed in the video. This is also explained by the lyrics and title of the song ‘Let me love you’.

Media Preliminary Music Video
How has this exercise informed your own project?
Ashley and I produced this short music video of “Dancing in the street” with the intention of using the green screen. As we rushed the setting up of the green screen we were unable to use it to its full capability, this is due to lighting it wrong so there were some shadows cast during filming. During the editing process it was near on impossible to get rid of the shadows, so we improvised and overlaid images into the video. Over all I feel the preliminary music video went rather well and I will take these improvements and use them in my main music video in September.
